🐦 Fun fact: the word "DevOps" was essentially born as a Twitter hashtag — Debois needed a short conference name, shortened "Development + Operations," and tweeted #devops. It stuck.

The tools are the easy part. The mindset — shared responsibility, automate everything, make releases a non-event — is what makes it DevOps.

Let the stat breathe. The point isn't the number — it's that deploys became so safe and automated they stopped being scary events. This sets up "why" before we formally define DevOps.
So… what IS it?
Definition
DevOps is a culture and set of practices that bridge software development and operations — so teams ship faster , more often , and more reliably .
Not a tool. Not a single job title. A way of working where the people who build it also help run it.
Now that they've seen the history and the values, the definition lands instead of feeling abstract.

The whole idea in one picture: Dev, Ops, and QA stop being handoff stages and become one overlapping team. DevOps lives in the intersection.
What a DevOps engineer manages
Almost every responsibility falls under six key scopes
🏗️ Infrastructure — servers, containers, cloud
🌐 Networking — DNS, load balancers, firewalls
🔒 Security — access, secrets, hardening
⚙️ Automation — CI/CD, scripting
📈 Monitoring — metrics, logs, alerts
💰 Cost Control — right-sizing, cloud spend
This is the mental model for the whole role: whatever the tool, it maps to one of these six scopes — Infrastructure, Networking, Security, Automation, Monitoring, Cost Control. The 30-day course touches all six.
